Art Proficient Honors

Art Proficient Honors Syllabus:

Dr. Deaton Rm. 1603

Art proficient honors is for students who have excelled in art beginning and art intermediate and are serious in continuing their studies in the visual arts.  Art proficient honors focuses on art production, portfolio development, research, writing and critique.  We more deeply explore concepts covered in art beginning and art intermediate.  Students will be expected work more independently on projects and will be encouraged to go above and beyond project specifications.

I teach using the flipped classroom model.  This means students will complete instructional modules and lesson online using Canvas.  As the entire course is online, it is accessible from home.  If you are absent please follow along in canvas so as not to get behind.  Students will complete instruction in class.  If a student cannot complete all assignments during class time, they may work on them at home and turn them in the following day.

There will be specific due dates for every project and homework.  For every day a project is late it will result in a 10-point deduction on their final grade.  If absent from class students will be given 1 extra day per absence (up to 5) to complete and hand in work.  If work is never handed in it will result in a zero, no exceptions! Homework can only be turned in the day it is due (unless absent: then it is due upon the students return-meaning no extensions.)  Incomplete work will receive no higher than a 50.  Work that is wrinkled, bent, torn, etc will not be accepted.

Students will maintain a sketchbook for class and homework assignments.  Students are also required to provide their own portfolio to house their work.  There is not enough space in my classroom to house everyone’s art so ensure its safety I recommend getting a portfolio that has handles and a closure of some kind.  Works in this class are only to be of a high quality and it would be unfortunate to have your work ruined due to poor storage.

Students will be given a participation grade.  This grade is based on the student’s participation in class discussions, instruction, and their ability to clean up the class room and their workspace.  Participation is also based on student’s ability to manage their time well.  Students who do not use class time wisely, who wander out of their seats, cause distractions, or otherwise make no progress during class time will lose points on participation.

Bathroom passes will be given at the beginning of each nine weeks.  Once a student has used up their bathroom passes they will not be allowed to leave the room.

At the end of the nine weeks students may turn in bathroom passes for up to 50 points extra credit each.  These cannot be used on art journal assignments but may be used for any other minor or major grades.  Students are given 4 passes per 9 weeks (8 total for the semester.)  If you lose passes I will not replace them.

Honors Credit:

To earn honors credit for the course students will be asked to produce a large in and out of class project. And complete three research papers. The in and out of class project will be producing a in depth altered book based on illustration, the elements of art, the principles of design, mixed media, and collage techniques. The books will focus on utilizing literacy skills. This ongoing project will give students the opportunity to create their own personalized book through recycling. Most materials for this book will be provided in class but students are encouraged to provide their own supplies to be more personalized. One day a week we will spend a class working on the altered book. Progress will be checked and graded weekly as a homework assignment. It will be due as a whole at the end of the nine weeks for a project grade. For more detailed information, handouts, etc on the book project go to www.literacyandartproject.weebly.com.

The three research papers which will be completed the second nine weeks and will focus on three major concepts in art.  The first be a research paper on a famous artist of the student’s choice.  The second will be a paper analyzing a piece of art.  The third will be a paper studying a career in art.  Each paper will come with a detailed outline and be gone over in class.  Students will have ample time to complete papers and will be given opportunities in class to work on papers as well.  Not having a computer or printer will not be an acceptable excuse as we have resources in class and at school to assist students.  Papers showing plagiarism will not be accepted and work will be counted as a zero.

Outline for Honors Requirements:

The outline below details when each honors assignment will be due.  Honors credit is earned by showing motivation, dedication, and strong work ethic in and out of school.  You will be given time in class to work on all honors assignments but to complete work to the level of an honors student, these assignments will require you to work outside of class as well.  Please keep an eye on due dates, no late work will be accepted  you be given all due dates on the first day of school.  If you lose this sheet all dates can be found in canvas in the altered book module.  Anywork not turned in on the listed due date will result in a zero.  Notice all assignments are due at 11:59 on canvas.  All stories should be filmed using good light, a good camera, and be clearly visible as you read the story out loud.  Please explain your pages and the artistic choices you made.  Any film that I cannot see clearly will result in a 50.

We will work on honors assignments every Wednesday so be prepared and bring all necessary materials.  For all assignments, all requirements are in canvas.  You “not knowing” a requirement is not an acceptable excuse to use as an honors student.  Inclement weather will not affect due dates, you are still responsible for work even if we miss school due to hurricanes or snow.

Be prepared, be diligent, and manage your time well.  I know many of you have AP, others honors classes, athletics, band, work, etc to deal with.  However, you chose to sign up for an honors class and you will be held accountable to meet all honors expectations.  I will support you in any way I can, I am here for you, and I know you can do this!
