Art Advanced Honors
Art Advanced Honors Course Syllabus
Dr. Deaton Rm. 1603:
Art advanced honors is the highest regular art course offered at the public education level. Therefore the projects in this class are to the same level as those in the Advanced Placement Studio Art course. This class is for serious artists who have a passion for art, a positive attitude, and a great work ethic. Students in this course must be self-motivated and dedicated to the course and their art in order to succeed. Students must be open to criticism and need to have the attitude that they are here to improve and grow as artists. Students will work more independently in this course and there fore will be given more responsibility.
I am here to support you and help you find success in my classroom. I am always open to respectful conversations about anything dealing with my course, assignments, grades, or this school. I want you to succeed, I want you to have fun, and I want you to learn something while you are with me. I realize I have a lot of rules, but all of these rules make sure we are maximizing our class time to learn as much as possible in an equitable and safe way. I am here for you no matter what and no matter who you are. If you are struggling or are concerned about anything relating to my class or this school, let me know and we can work through any issues together!
I really looking forward to working with you over the next 18 weeks!

Grade Percentages:
60% Major Works: Projects, tests, and presentations.
40% Minor Works: Class work, quizzes, homework, and participation.
Grade Specifics:
- There will be specific due dates for every project and assignment.
- For every day a project is late it will result in a 10-point deduction on their final grade.
- If absent from class students will be given 1 extra day per absence (up to 5) to complete and hand in work.
- If work is never handed in it will result in a zero, no exceptions!
- Incomplete work will receive no higher than a 50.
- Work that is wrinkled, bent, torn, etc will not be accepted.
Homework Policy: I do not assign homework. If a student needs more time on the work we do in class they can take it home to complete it. BUT these assignments are technically due at the end of class when they are assigned. I use these assignments to inform my instruction for the following day but understand students work at different speeds and want to accommodate that.
If a student chooses to take work home and complete it and does not turn it in the next day it will be scored as a zero because we will already be moving on to the next topic. It is a choice not a requirement to take work home, please remember this so that you can use class time wisely to complete all work.
Absence Expectations: My entire course is on Canvas. If you are absent please watch the class recording posted in canvas so that you do not fall behind. If you plan to be absent you can follow along with the course by watching these recordings and emailing your assignments so that you do not fall behind.
Tardies: The bell ringing means it is time for class to begin. If you are not in the room when the bell rings you will be marked tardy. You will have 2 minutes to get your items and get in your seats after the bell rings. If you are not in your seat and ready to learn at this time you will also be marked tardy.
Cleaning up: It is your responsibility to keep this room clean. The way it is when you enter is the way it should be when you leave. Failure to clean up could result in you having to stay after the bell or loosing points on your project grade. It is unfair and immature to leave a mess for others to clean up, this behavior is unacceptable while at OGHS.
Cell Phones: Cell phones will be places in pockets by the cubbies. The number pocket you have will match the number on the desk you sit at. I understand we want our cell phones on us at all times but when we are together I want us to be distraction free. I also will not have my cell phone on me, it will remain in my office and out of use. Lets make the most of our time together by being present and engaged in our learning environment!
Using Class Matierals: It is a privilege not a right to be provided with items to make art. I will provide you everything you need (except for sketchbooks and colored pencils.) If items are broken, damaged, or defaced you will no longer be given class supplies and will have to provide them yourself.
If you would like to take home supplies you can sign them out. Failure to return items will lead to them being charged to your school fee account. The only items that can be sent home are items we have class sets of. If I do not have a class set you cannot borrow it. Please ask for individual supply needs.
Movement Around the Classroom: Don’t. There are lots of breakable items and class assignments happening around the room. If you are out of your seat you risk breaking or damaging items in the classroom.
If you are out of your seat, you are not making art. Please stay in your assigned seat at all times. You may stand at your desk to work.
Do not use the sinks without permission and please wait until the end of class to throw items away. We will have 10 minutes at the end of every class to clean up so you can leave when the bell rings. Please wait until then to move around the room for any reason.
If people crowd around the door or abuse the privlege of cleaning up early, this time will be taken away.
Human Passes: will be given out at the beginning of each semester. We are all human and things happen. These passes allow you to use your phone in case of an emergency, be tardy in case of an emergency, or need a little more time on a project you struggled with. These passes are the only time I allow exceptions to the school board policies and OGHS expectations relating to tardies, bathroom use during class time, cell phones, and due dates. Once you use them up you cannot get more. If you loose your sheet you will not get another one.
At the end of the nine weeks students may turn in only the bathroom passes for that nine weeks (3 per quarter) for up to 50 points extra credit each. These cannot be used on art journal assignments but may be used for any other minor or major grades. If you loose your human pass sheet you cannot claim an extra credit.
To use a human pass please bring sheet to Dr. Deaton to mark off each one used.
Attitude in Class: The experience you have in this room is up to you. You choose every minute, every day, how this class goes. The amount of fun of this class is determined by the choices you make, so, make good ones. We are going to have a fun time in this class with or without you. You will be dismissed if you negatively impact the classroom environment. If you are having a bad day, let me know. We are all human and life is hard. Communication is key for us to work together. If you are having a rough time you may go to timeout, student services, or can step out in the hall if you need a minute to collect yourself, but you have to communicate this with me.
Mind Journal: Students will complete a personal mind journal. This will be explained in depth in class. This assignment gives students a way to personally interpret assignments and topics from our curriculum in their own ways while focusing on social emotional well being. Students will work on this project every day for the first 15 minutes of class until the end of the semester when it is due as a whole project.
Each week students will be graded on their participation with a minor grade and are required to complete 1 page a week in and outside of class. If they do not have the required pages they will receive a 0. If the pages are incomplete it will be a 50. There are no late grades for this assignment as they will have to make this up in class. Mind journals are due by 8:15 am on Friday.
At the end of the semester, students will turn in books for a cumulative major grade. If any pages are missing the book will be scored as an automatic 50. The goal of this assignment is to get students making art constantly and consistently and learning to use art to navigate their emotions. Application of media and completeness will be the only parts graded. How students interpret assignments in journal is completely up to them. See the art journal module in canvas for more information.

Class Expectations:

There is NO EXTRA CREDIT for students who do not complete and turn in assignments. The student is always responsible for their experience and grade in this course.
In this class I want students to think for themselves. They will be given assignments that vary from very specific requirements to open ended compositions. I want to create a positive learning environment in my room that encourages creativity and freedom of expression. Every student’s personal interests and styles will be encouraged and nurtured. Students are expected to be on task, to participate in class discussions and critiques, and complete assignments on time while meeting all requirements. Students are to be respectful, courteous, and responsible for themselves, their assignments, and classroom materials.
Art Advanced Honors Requirements:
During this course in order to receive honors credit you will have several out of class assignments you must complete. For this class we will complete a mind journal that practices understanding how personal perspective is influenced by temporal context. This journal will also focus on promoting social emotional learning in relation to art. It is hoped what you learn and practice in this journal can become a lifelong lesson in mindfulness.
ART ADVANCED MIND JOURNAL

This journal is designed to be an exploratory space of thoughts, feelings, and visual media. There is no right or wrong way to complete this journal. There are expectations though. You will be graded on completion of themes and effort. The more time you put into this journal the better grade you will get. You will be allowed 15 minutes at the start of each class to work in your journal. That would equal an hour and 15 minutes a week of class time to complete your work. Your work should reflect a minimum of that amount of time spent on it.
I will provide this journal to you.
Expectations:
- Pages must be filled-You can have blank space but it must be purposeful but just from neglect.
- There must be one page minimum per theme.
- The pages must look thoughtfully created. If you rush and scribble something you will not receive full credit.
This book is inspired by art journaling and using daily art practices as a reflection of self, society, and the world around you. This experience is designed to allow student artists to use the tools they have learned from previous courses to create a piece guided by a prompt that extends past the media and journal in from of them. This project is meant to be a prelude and practice of how to keep art present in your life after to school to help “digest” the world around you.
Grading and Due Dates:
- There will be weekly grades. I will call you up to assess your progress. If you have not done anything you will get a zero. If you work is poor or thoughtless you will get a 50. These will be weekly minor grades. I WILL GRADE THIS AT THE START OF CLASS ON FRIDAYS.
- You will turn in your mind journal for a major grade at the end of each quarter.
