Art Intermediate

Art Intermediate Syllabus

Dr. Deaton Rm. 1603

Art intermediate is a course designed for students who have taken and showed success in art beginning.  In art intermediate students will be involved with a variety of artistic media, they will thoroughly examine famous artists and the movements their art was involved in, and they will begin creating full artist compositions with understandings of the elements of art and principles of design.  Unlike art beginning, art intermediate focuses on artistic creativity and interpretation, meaning students will need to put more effort and thought in to their work.  Students will need to be more engaged and enthusiastic in this course as we will discuss art, artist, and movements more openly.

I am here to support you and help you find success in my classroom.  I am always open to respectful conversations about anything dealing with my course, assignments, grades, or this school.  I want you to succeed, I want you to have fun, and I want you to learn something while you are with me.  I realize I have a lot of rules, but all of these rules make sure we are maximizing our class time to learn as much as possible in an equitable and safe way.  I am here for you no matter what and no matter who you are.  If you are struggling or are concerned about anything relating to my class or this school, let me know and we can work through any issues together!

I really looking forward to working with you over the next 18 weeks!

Grade Percentages:

60% Major Works: Projects, tests, and presentations.

40% Minor Works: Class work, quizzes, homework, and participation.

Grade Specifics:

  • There will be specific due dates for every project and assignment.
  • For every day a project is late it will result in a 10-point deduction on their final grade.
  • If absent from class students will be given 1 extra day per absence (up to 5) to complete and hand in work.
  • If work is never handed in it will result in a zero, no exceptions!
  • Incomplete work will receive no higher than a 50.
  • Work that is wrinkled, bent, torn, etc will not be accepted.

Homework Policy: I do not assign homework.  If a student needs more time on the work we do in class they can take it home to complete it.  BUT these assignments are technically due at the end of class when they are assigned.  I use these assignments to inform my instruction for the following day but understand students work at different speeds and want to accommodate that.

If a student chooses to take work home and complete it and does not turn it in the next day it will be scored as a zero because we will already be moving on to the next topic.  It is a choice not a requirement to take work home, please remember this so that you can use class time wisely to complete all work.

Absence Expectations:  My entire course is on Canvas.  If you are absent please watch the class recording posted in canvas so that you do not fall behind.  If you plan to be absent you can follow along with the course by watching these recordings and emailing your assignments so that you do not fall behind.

Tardies:  The bell ringing means it is time for class to begin.  If you are not in the room when the bell rings you will be marked tardy.  You will have 2 minutes to get your items and get in your seats after the bell rings.  If you are not in your seat and ready to learn at this time you will also be marked tardy.

Cleaning up:  It is your responsibility to keep this room clean.  The way it is when you enter is the way it should be when you leave.  Failure to clean up could result in you having to stay after the bell or loosing points on your project grade.  It is unfair and immature to leave a mess for others to clean up, this behavior is unacceptable while at OGHS.

Cell Phones:  Cell phones will be places in pockets by the cubbies.  The number pocket you have will match the number on the desk you sit at.  I understand we want our cell phones on us at all times but when we are together I want us to be distraction free.  I also will not have my cell phone on me, it will remain in my office and out of use.  Lets make the most of our time together by being present and engaged in our learning environment!

Using Class Matierals:  It is a privilege not a right to be provided with items to make art.  I will provide you everything you need (except for sketchbooks and colored pencils.)  If items are broken, damaged, or defaced you will no longer be given class supplies and will have to provide them yourself.

If you would like to take home supplies you can sign them out.  Failure to return items will lead to them being charged to your school fee account.  The only items that can be sent home are items we have class sets of.  If I do not have a class set you cannot borrow it.  Please ask for individual supply needs.

Movement Around the Classroom:  Don’t.  There are lots of breakable items and class assignments happening around the room.  If you are out of your seat you risk breaking or damaging items in the classroom.

If you are out of your seat, you are not making art.  Please stay in your assigned seat at all times.  You may stand at your desk to work.

Do not use the sinks without permission and please wait until the end of class to throw items away.  We will have 10 minutes at the end of every class to clean up so you can leave when the bell rings.  Please wait until then to move around the room for any reason.

If people crowd around the door or abuse the privlege of cleaning up early, this time will be taken away.

Modules:  Students will complete a personal portfolio of art modules.  This will be explained in depth in class.  This assignment gives students a way to personally interpret assignments and topics from our curriculum in their own ways.  Students will work on this project every Friday in class until the end of the semester when it is due as a whole project.

Each week students will be graded on their participation with a minor grade and are required to complete 1 module a week in and outside of class.  If they do not have the module they will receive a 0.  If it is incomplete it will be a 50.  There are no late grades for this assignment as they will have to make this up in class.

At the end of the semester, students will turn in portfolios for a cumulative major grade.  If any pages are missing the book will be scored as an automatic 50.  The goal of this assignment is to get students making art constantly and consistently.  Application of media and completeness will be the only parts graded.  How students interpret assignments in the modules is completely up to them.  See the modules in canvas for more information.

This portfolio will also be used to earn the teacher recommendation to take the honors classes.  Failure to complete the modules will mean you will not be able to take art proficient or advanced honors.

Attitude in Class:  The experience you have in this room is up to you.  You choose every minute, every day, how this class goes.  The amount of fun of this class is determined by the choices you make, so, make good ones.  We are going to have a fun time in this class with or without you.  You will be dismissed if you negatively impact the classroom environment.  If you are having a bad day, let me know.  We are all human and life is hard.  Communication is key for us to work together.  If you are having a rough time you may go to timeout, student services, or can step out in the hall if you need a minute to collect yourself, but you have to communicate this with me.
