Who AM I?

My name is Michael Henthorn. I have been a professional educator for twenty-five years and am certified in English, Social Studies, and Secondary Administration. I am so pleased to be a member of the Oak Grove High School educational team.  I am a 1998 graduate of West Liberty State College, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Social Science Education. I graduated magna cum laude (3.75 or higher) and was one of two graduates that earned the prestigious Honors’ Program distinction on my diploma. In 2001, I earned a Master of Education in Divergent Learning degree from Columbia College, an invaluable program that helped me in my quest to determine how to effectively reach and teach different learning styles. I also received National Board Certification in English Language Arts/Young Adult in 2003, renewed in 2013 and have both assessed and trained assessors for The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. I have evaluated SAT essays and various state exit exam essays through Pearson Educational Consulting.

My mission in life is to help empower young adults to make informed, socially responsive life decisions that will help them succeed. In his landmark text, The World is Flat, Thomas L. Friedman deftly describes a world without borders, where homogeneity is devalued and where diversity in all aspects of culture is celebrated, and when this occurs, conflict resolution increases dramatically. To help achieve better global awareness, in 2014, I served as a Teachers for Global Classrooms Ambassador, an initiative sponsored by The US Department of State, and traveled to Colombia to participate in a teacher exchange program.

School must be a safe, welcoming place for all students. Discipline comes from the word Disciple, which means “to follow.” In the role of Instructional Coach, I plan to help youth learn personal responsibility as well as to assist my fellow teachers with content creation, classroom management, and professional growth as needed. For most of my career, I have served as both a teacher mentor and teacher evaluator, and I have worked to advance the profession as a NBPTS Assessor and Trainer for Testing Center exercises, Portfolio Renewals, and, most recently, Maintenance of Certification. I will always be a ready resource for teachers who wish to advance their careers.

I will do whatever it takes to ensure that Oak Grove High School and Oak Grove Middle School continue their respective traditions of excellence.
